Burdock (Arctium lappa L.) is a root native to Northern Asia and Europe, though it now grows in the United States. The burdock plant’s deep roots are very long and vary in color from beige to brown and nearly black on the outside.

-Burdock root has been used for centuries in holistic medicine to treat a variety of different conditions. Traditionally, it’s been most commonly used as a diuretic and a digestive aid.

-In vitro studies report activity of burdock extracts against human pathogens, including bacteria (eg, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus), fungi (eg, Candida albicans), protozoans, and viruses (eg, HIV-1, HSV-1, HSV-2, adenovirus)(Chan 2011, Zimmermann 2012)

-In 1999, a clinical study on traditional Chinese medicine found a "satisfactory" reduction in hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes with burdock.

Potential Allergen: Burdock may also trigger an allergy in people sensitive to daisies, chrysanthemums, or ragweed. Discontinue use and see your healthcare provider if you suspect an allergic reaction.

Avoid if: if you're pregnant, as the herb has been reported to stimulate the uterus and possibly cause premature labor.  People with diabetes who take blood-sugar-lowering medicines should not use burdock root because it may cause hypoglycemia.

As with every herb, please do your research before use.
